Last night at the Golden Globe Awards Oprah Winfrey received the Cecil B. Demille Award award, the first black woman to receive the said award. She rocked the nation with her powerful acceptance speech, touching on the “Times Up” movement, a movement dedicated to fighting Sexual Harassment. Oprah prophesied, “I want all the girls watching here and now to know that a new day is on the horizon,” words that brought the audience to their feet and left viewers empowered and hopeful for a new tomorrow. Oprah also stated, “Speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have,” these words resonated with thousands–including myself.

The Speech also stirred speculation that she may run for president in 2020. Oprah has not yet addressed the claims, but a source revealed, she is “actively thinking” on the opportunity. Her longtime companion, Stedman heightened expectations for an Oprah Winfrey presidential run when he according to the Los Angeles Times stated, “It’s up to the people. She would absolutely do it.”
Ten years ago the thought of a socialite becoming president would’ve been comical, but with the victory of Trump in 2016, I think most would agree– anything is possible and Oprah’s experience oddly enough is very similar to Trump’s:
Oprah Winfrey | Donald Trump |
Net Worth: 2.8 Billion | Net Worth: 3.1 Billion |
Talk Show Host | The Apprentice |
O Oprah Magazine | Author |
Academy Award Winnter | Entrepreneur |
No Political experience | No political experience |
Today, in America the president has to come with some charm, controversy or known reputation because that’s what our nation has proven its attracted to.
Oprah Winfrey would be the first black woman to run for president. This could mean the voice of a group not often heard in politics, would finally ring through the White House. We wouldn’t know however until 2019 what her campaign would stand for, but we know for sure equal rights for women in the workplace and squashing the misconceptions of what a woman in power should be are social stigmas that are sure to disappear upon her election.
