How to Uplift Mood

Everybody has seen those days where it feels as if grey cloud is your halo —everything seems to be going against you instead of with you. It is easy to stay in that rut and get stuck in those emotions, but sometimes we have to remind ourselves that it’s just a matter of perspective. You have to find that silver lining in that grey cloud. Along with perspective, there are other methods proven to help lift your spirits. Below are five things you should do when you feel a little blue:

1. Let yourself feel

Occasionally you’ll find yourself in a bad mood or have a bad week and that’s okay. Whether it’s because of a person or a matter of events, it happens. But those feelings can grow if you try to keep them all inside and act as if nothing is bothering you. You have to let it all out. Let yourself feel whatever you’re feeling and stop trying to fight the emotions. Cry, scream, vent, express yourself in whatever outlet you feel comfortable in. It can be painting, writing, exercise or music. It’s okay to give yourself time to deal with your feelings. How else will you get over them? But while dealing with these emotions, you have to be mindful of how long you allow yourself to feel low and remind yourself that it will pass.

2. Family Time

As I’ve gotten older I’ve realized how important family is. Family can be defined in many ways, it doesn’t have to be the traditional family model we have been taught to believe. Family can be anyone that brings the feeling of comfort and safety when you’re around them. Spending time with your family and sharing laughs could be what you need to lift your spirits. Expressing your emotions to your closest family member could also give insight as to why you’re upset or it can give you a different perspective on this issue which can help in resolving it.

3. Go outside and Exercise

Being outside with nature has a multitude of benefits. Lifting your mood is one of the best ones. Going on a run or a walk is extremely beneficial for your overall health. It’s proven in countless studies that sunlight betters your mood by raising your serotonin levels. Serotonin has a direct affect on your wellbeing, happiness, and other bodily functions. Exercise is also beneficial to your mental health. Focusing on that pain during your exercise can temporarily distract you from your problems. After your workout, your body will release endorphins— another chemical used to combat stress and pain and helps with making you happier.

4. Social Media Break

Even reduced screen time and giving your mind a break from the internet can lift your mood. Sometimes being consumed by social media is just plain tiring. Do you ever find yourself kind of “free” and relieved from the vortex that is social media when you’ve left it for a while? I know I do. It can sometimes trigger subconscious feelings you weren’t even aware of which then feed into those sad emotions you’re already experiencing.

5. Treat Yo’Self

As Tom and Donna said on Parks and Recreation, “TREAT YO SELF!” Spend time doing the things you love to do. There is nothing like a good ol’ fashion pick me up. Whether that is going on a date, eating at your favorite restaurant, or going shopping. Everyone knows the joy brought by your favorite activity, so indulging in them will help you get over those funky blues you have been in. Even if it’s momentary, all those small moments add up.
