Rihanna Debuted Fenty alongside LVMH May 19th. She is the first black designer to head an LVMH fashion house. And It goes without saying that Rihanna’s move has paved the way for other black designers to connect with the luxury brand. But the story is more nuanced than that. Fenty premiered Release 6-19 just a few days ago, and it falls nothing short of Carribean flavor.
What is beautiful about this collection are the stories that are wrapped in the clothing. Rihanna born and raised in Barbados is unveiling her essences through her clothing. The summer capsule consists of curve-caressing dresses in bright Island hues: Fuchsia, Teal and Coral. Some the are cinched, asymmetrical and others are printed in Japanese inspired art. The fusion of culture is overwhelming in the best way, and its right on time for summer.
It wouldn’t be a Fenty release without the accessories. The 6-19 Release consists of gold jewelry– inspired and sculpted in Afro-Carribean fashion. T-style signature heals and techno-masks adorned in studs are among this beautiful body of work. From what I can tell Rihanna has no plans of releasing designs that she would no wear herself. The Fenty 5-19 Release gave us tomboy-chic. And Fenty 6-19 Release is the tropical island girl we know and love. We plan to expect nothing less than her versatile fashion in the future collections.
On July 10th we anticipate Rihanna to release a line of dresses diving into her Immigration experience. Rihanna is using her platform to give the narratives of the poor, of minorities, of immigrants, and I am here for it! Inclusivity and diversity in its purest form.
Did I mention she snapped all the images for the release herself? Here’s a shot from the Feny Instagram account.
